WESTMORELAND COALFIELD
The Westmoreland Coalfield, sometimes called the Greensburg Field, contained the mines between Blairsville and Jeanette along the main line of the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Mining was mostly in the Pittsburgh coal seam. The Upper Freeport and Lower
Kittanning Seams are also mined in the Westmoreland Field. Jamison Coal and Coke and Keystone Coal and Coke were the principal players in this field. One of the last operations in this coalfield was the
"synfuel" plant at Bovard, and, except for the occasional strip mine, the Westmoreland Coalfield is mined out.
