NATIONAL, MD

National was another Consolidation Coal Co. mining town.

Coal camp houses at National. A gentleman I met there said these houses were built by the Consolidated Coal Company. His wife said that her grandfather came to the Georges Creek area from Ireland to mine coal. (July 2003 image by author)

Old mine portal near National still bears the inscription "Mine No. 10." (July 2003 image by author)

This tipple near National was operated by the Winner Brothers Coal Co.. It was still in use at the time of the photo, but the coal was being trucked out. I was told that the local residents complained about the dust generated by the rail loadout and got it shut down. Despite the presence of coal gondola cars, I was told that the train had not visited the tipple in about a year. Judging by the vegetation on the railroad I believed it. (July 2003 image by author)
